Yet another book review...

Their Eyes Were Watching God
By Zora Neale Hurston
Amazon link

One thing that I want to get out of the way is that the descriptions (especially later in Chapter 18) are some of the most beautiful and image-provoking I'd ever read in recent years. Hurston's words are earthy, with no trace of pretentiousness. Why can't all literature be like that? Why do some people feel the need to get all superfluous? Hurston proved that a writer can do it without putting down the reader with esoteric references that only Super Snobby English Majors would get (yes, I'm looking at you, Ms. Pessl...).

The story is pretty straightforward: the life and times of the heroine/narrator Janie Crawford. She has lived and loved, but now she has returned to her hometown and is relaying the story's events to her best friend Pheoby.

I would like to discuss the rest of the book, but I fear spoiling it for y'all. Instead, let me discuss the basics. The characters are fleshed-out and real, each dealing with their joys and tragedies. Watching Janie learn and live her life is an amazing journey that any reader should experience. The rest of the cast are just as engaging.

It's a short read, but it packs so much in less than 200 pages. Highly recommended.

Well, this is my last full week of school. I have a project (possible final) to work on in Editing. I have to remember a few things for American Lit, and then I should be set.

I leave you, listening to Keane's "Sunshine"...
